Melnicove exhibit in HL turns literature into art
“It represents mine and other artists' efforts to expand the notion of typography and text to make it more visual than we normally think about it,” Melnicove said. “When most people read a book they don't think of it as a visual object. They try to
Posters are among the oldest forms of advertising, and, as such, have become embroiled in modern society. We know, simply because posters always offer interesting and important information, that when we see them we should pay attention to their contents. Because of the natural reaction which they inspire in us, posters now enjoy many uses other than advertising. Posters can, for example, be used for presentations, protests, and other forms of message conveyance. However, regardless of their intended purpose, one universal rule applies to effective poster design, and that rule dictates that truly effective posters should display a perfect union between pertinent information and aesthetic appeal. Finding this balance should be one of the most important considerations for poster designers, regardless of the type of poster being designed. But, before we explore the details of effective poster design, allow us to take a brief look at the visuals pertaining to posters, and how they affect the different poster forms. Posters as Art The purs uit of this delicate balance has attracted many artists to the interesting world of poster production. For example, recognised pioneer of Art Nouveau, Eugène Samuel Grasset, was a noted artist during the Belle Époque period in French art, yet lent his distinctive influence to poster design in that era. In fact, posters of the distinctive periods of history all represented – and sometimes possibly influenced – the popular art forms of their times. A look at the promotional posters used for bands like The Who, for example, shows the distinctive artwork associated with the Mod movement of the 1960s. Around the same time, the United States was experiencing a mounting interest in psychedelic... Of course, there was no barrier between the two styles, and some influence did cross over, but the early ‘mod’ and ‘hippy’ styles show how poster art has featured popular art over the decades. This can possibly be attributed to the fact that posters, as previously stated, are designed to attract peoples’ attention in order to convey a message. This is why the graphics depicted on posters throughout history have often suited the style of the era, even if the content varied quite drastically. The Uses of Posters Posters have been used throughout the years for many purposes. Still others were used to advertise establishments and events, while some were used merely to inform. the pin-up posters of the 1940s and ‘50s certainly fall into this category. Modern posters still enjoy similar uses. The fact that posters are so popular in our society means that they are still an extremely effective means of attracting attention. • Advertising: This is arguably the most popular purpose for posters. Because of their long history in this field, people inherently know that posters are used to convey information and thus consciously, or subconsciously, devote their attention to the content offered by posters, provided the posters are well-designed. For this reason, advertising posters are often found in public places – such as tube stations, bus stops, and mounted on streetlamps – and often feature eye-catching visuals. • Information: Some posters are not concerned with the creation of customers, but rather simply wish to inform people as to a certain issue. Once again, because posters inherently demand attention, they are effective tools in campaigns to raise social awareness. However, simply because informative posters aren’t aimed at creating sales does not mean that they should take less care in their visuals. Informative posters also need to feature bright and intriguing images in order to encourage passers-by to stop and take in their messages. Informative posters thus need to conform to design techniques similar to those of advertising posters. • Aesthetics: Some posters aren’t concerned with the delivery of any message at all, and are simply created for the joy they.
