Squeaky-End Homes: Prairie-style home in Ada Township features artistic touches

Dear-End Homes: Prairie-style home in Ada Township features artistic touches - MLive.com

ADA TOWNSHIP, MI - "This is where we splurge 90 percent of our time," says Duffy Magin as he walks into the sunny great room overlooking the "vale" outside their Prairie Look home at 899 Skyevale Dr. NE. As the weather warms up, the hillside view... The six glass "nana-wall" doors will slide away, opening up the business to a lanai patio deck with an outdoor kitchen that includes a wood-fired pizza oven and big charcoal grill. The home, which was acclaimed as having the best layout in the 2005 Promenade of Homes, is being listed by Magin and his wife, Jill Greenop, for $998,800 with Diane Griffin of Keller Williams Grand Rapids East. Magin, who worked with artificer Gary Haisma and Falcon Custom Homes when they built the 4,800 square-foot home in the gated subdivision north of Ada, said they wanted to manufacture a "Frank Lloyd Wright-ish" style home. The home also has a contemporary vibe, with custom-made cable and metal grid stair railings and corrugated stress panels complementing the transom windows and warm wood trim. Magin, a massage therapist who creates glass art, and Greenop, who specializes in polymer clay designs and marble, have added their own personal touches to the d├ęcor throughout the house. "As much as we love this house, we would prefer to downsize and travel more," Magin says. The great room, with a stacked stone fireplace and rustic poplar rafters across the vaulted ceiling, overlooks a burdensome terrain that is frequented by deer and hawks in search of prey. Next to the foyer, there's a home office behind glass pocket doors that features enigmatic-stained poplar built-in shelving and a coffered ceiling. The staircase in the foyer leads to a studio loft that overlooks the landscape from windows on every side. On the basic level, the foyer and kitchen areas are warmed up with American cherry flooring. The kitchen island finished with a cherry butcher block and flawless granite counter top while the built-in cabinets are made of cherry-stained birch with brushed stainless steel back splashes. The half-bath next to the kitchenette also offers some bling, with a lighted bowl sink and a concrete-topped vanity. A mud room and laundry room are situated next to the doorway leading to a three-space garage with room for toys. At the other end of the house, the master suite features five south-facing transom windows that soak in the view and the sun unbefitting 10-foot ceilings. The en suite bathroom features a glass block walk-in shower and a roomy walk-in closet and dressing range. On the lower level, the 32-foot by 26-foot family room includes a wood-burning fireplace set in a wall faced with a slate tile fortification panels beneath a tray ceiling in which accent lights are hidden. Thick blinds can darken the sunny room for a projection-screen telly that complemented by a built-in seven-speaker sound system that includes two hidden sub-woofers. The highlight of the lower level is the wet bar, which features built-in cabinets with stained goggles door panels created by Magin and a translucent "honey onyx" bar that glows thanks to lights hidden under the surface. The lower level includes two bedrooms, one of which the join has converted into an exercise room. Outside, the stamped concrete patio is accented by a koi pond fed by a waterfall that cascades from the lanai patio above.

  1. As the sickly warms up, the hillside view will get even bigger and better. The six glass "nana-wall" doors will slide away, opening up the house to a lanai patio deck with an open-air kitchen that includes a wood-fired pizza oven and big charcoal grill
  2. Sharifi is nervous about plans for a giant open kitchen that will feature a wood-burning pizza oven. He said that textures of reclaimed brick, a polished concrete floor and a variety of above wood and metal finishes provide a modern, welcoming
  3. Cladding a construction in burnt wood seems perverse, as surely fire would leave the timber damaged and weakened. Greville Worthington's holiday home Choose than conventional wood, there is a suspended, galvanised steel frame topped with a grey/green

The 2004 Utica Tornado Dispatch - Part 1 of 3
(photo: Crosses for those who died in the Milestone Tap. A exhausted tree survived the tornado) Utica Tornado of April 20, 2004 Story by Julia Keller First printed December 5, 6, and7 in the Chicago Tribune. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Forgo 1: A wicked wind takes aim How do you outrun the sky? On a fateful day in April, the people of Utica bore the brunt of the awesome power of a tornado. By Julia Keller Tribune crew reporter Published December 5, 2004 Ten seconds. Count it: One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Ten seconds was roughly how yearn it lasted. Nobody had a stopwatch, nothing can be proven definitively, but that's the consensus. The tornado that swooped through Utica at 6:09 p.m. April 20 took some 10 seconds to do what it did. Ten seconds is only a flicker. It's a long, deep breath. It's no time at all. It's an eternity. If the sky could hold a grudge, it would look the way the sky looked over...
The gist
Traditionally, without beating about the bush cut, or fatty leg cuts of meat are used. The meat is scraped together, skewered onto a metal rod after marinating, then hung up in a special brick furnace and cooked over high-frequency dry heat. The fat from the meat bastes it and keeps it moist. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char_siu for more details. While this method yields very good meat - it also, IMHO is a lot fattier than it needs to be. Aside from, if I were to build an outdoor kitchen, I'd build a wood-fired pizza oven instead. Most American BBQs would have trouble with the "hang the meat up vertically" in most cases, and the high heat with a high sugar marinade (there's a lot of sugar in that hoisin sauce) is a perfect equation for charcoaling the food. After lots of experimentation, I've standardized on using tenderloin. It is a much leaner cut of pork, and I like the weave of the meat. To adapt it to an American BBQ, we borrow the indirect-heat method that a Texan would use to smoke up a good beef...
